The Phoenix Zoo offers a plethora of activities for family recreation. Sprawling over 125 acres (50 hectares), this privately-owned leisure facility is a must visit when in the Valley. It is home to over 1,300 exotic species including lions, giraffes, baboons and meerkats. Explore the verdant labyrinth of the Forest of Uco, take a hike along the African Trail, and enjoy a tractor ride at the Harmony Farm. In addition, the interactive programs on offer are both educational and entertaining.... less

Most of the animals were still out which was a nice surprise and we even got to see the new wolf cubs playing. :) People that say this is a small zoo have never been to my local zoo. This is at least a medium sized zoo - lots of walking but really not hilly. Animals seem well cared for and content. Not many snack areas open unfortunately but we just kept refilling our water bottle when we would see a water fountain. This is definitely worth a visit when in Phx.... less

Most have been a similar experience. This zoo is nice in that it has a lot of area wildlife in addition to exotic wildlife. Plan on walking A LOT. And since it is hot you will need to hydrate. The Ram habitat was neat as it is a natural desert feature. They have most animals you would expect to see (lion, tiger, giraffe, zebra, etc.). A lot of zoos I have been to have multiple animals in a habitat. They only had one lion, one hyena, one mountain lion, one bobcat, one tiger, etc. at least that we saw. No opportunity to see the animals socialize. I didn’t like that. That being said, I think this is a must see if you are spending some time in Phoenix. Plan to spend theme park prices for food and drink. I would eat before you go. Will help with energy and your pocket. And if you buy something from gift store plan for a sales pitch to give more. Didn’t even get a bag for what we bought. Just an offer to buy a bag to put what we already bought in.... less
